I have a new Sony Cybershot and want a replacement battery. Sony sells for $ 50 on the eBay site is available, but it is common for half price, plus shipping. My question is, even if it is 100% compatible with the generic camera battery can eventually cause damage or even destroy the camera ???????

You'll be fine.
I use generic batteries in my Olympus E-510.
They work well, but definitely less capacity, 20% or less.
But for me the batteries are only one tenth of the price, so I'm pretty happy with it.
Just stop complaining about a purchase of the battery and see how it works. Most of the things I found on eBay abroad, so if we want, wk3, rather than move it.
